Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young child when her father, who worked as a carnival barker died. The mother of the family had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she quit school only after two years to pursue an acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles such as in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime, but theatrical work eluded her. Her next job was as the "hat check" woman at a nightclub until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. It was there that she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
